What if memorials sought to preserve the memory of those affected by offering a solution that addressed how the tragedy occurred? Illuminate is the inaugural memorial of Hart Island, New York City’s public cemetery. The design composes four main programs unwrapping processes of life, death, burial and rejuvenation. They are designed to function holistically as a symphony and much like the island itself - are a living breathing machine. Illuminate serves to address the pragmatics of finite burial space, healing the landscape and inspiring systemic change.
