Grounded
“A hybrid space that combines retail, clothing alteration and coffee shop typologies to make an interactive and bespoke experience.”
Working with the existing structure of Adelaide’s former AMP building, ‘Grounded’ takes the concept of a regular coffee shop and turns it into a personalised barista experience. Customers are educated on their coffee and chai order via the counter display. Visitors are encouraged to touch, smell, and taste to better understand their ideal drink preferences.
The beverage element is paired with an immersive retail experience, taking customers on a journey to understand dress patterns and material types via ‘The Runway’. Visitors are paired with a tailor to create/adjust garments from sustainable fabrics. The customer is immersed in the tailoring process through grand change rooms and workspaces. The transparency of the framed workspace allows the customer to see their garment being made – staging the experience.
The two typologies are thoughtfully connected via the sustainable process of turning coffee grounds into fabric yarn, which supplies material for the tailor-made garments and interactive displays.
Objects such as dress patterns, mannequins and draping tape were elements that were used as conceptual inspiration for joinery elements and layout configurations within the space.
