Dementia has a bad name and is stereotyped to be seen as a disease and something that’s wrong and nothing more. Essere Insieme is a dementia care village in Mestre, Venice, where residents can live a normal life (through the inclusion of on-site amenities) in a safe and inclusive environment whilst receiving the high level of care that they require. Essere Insieme means ‘to be together’ and is the idea of bringing people near the beginning and near the end of their lives together – an intergenerational integration to create a supportive community with a culture of being open to learning from different perspectives achieved through the integration of a Montessori preschool.
