Approximately one mile long, Hart Island is the largest public cemetery in the United States. Those who are unclaimed after death are taken to Hart Island and buried in mass graves. To certain people living in New York, being buried there meant you were unloved, and for many today, it is still a fearful place. Ashes To Ashes is a scheme that aims to re-conceptualise the reputation and operations of Hart Island, to become a more welcoming place for those buried there, and for those who wish to grieve their loved ones.
